What Are the Leading Causes of Rideshare Accidents?

The growing demand for Uber and Lyft has increased the number of rideshare vehicles on the road—especially during peak hours. With that increase comes greater pressure on drivers to move quickly, accept more rides, and rely heavily on mobile apps. These factors can contribute to serious accidents when safety is compromised.
While not all rideshare drivers are negligent, many accidents occur due to the following common causes:
Distracted Driving
Rideshare driving is app-based, requiring frequent interaction with a smartphone for ride requests, navigation, and passenger communication. Taking attention off the road—even briefly—significantly increases the risk of an accident.
Speeding and Reckless Driving
In an effort to complete trips faster and maximize earnings, some drivers speed or drive aggressively. Speeding at intersections, sudden lane changes, and failure to obey traffic signals are leading contributors to serious collisions.
Poor Road and Weather Conditions
Heavy rain, strong winds, low visibility, and uneven or slippery road surfaces can make driving dangerous. These conditions require heightened caution, but accidents occur when drivers fail to adjust their driving behavior accordingly.
Vehicle Maintenance Negligence
Rideshare vehicles accumulate far more mileage than private cars. Failure to properly maintain brakes, tires, steering components, and other critical systems can lead to mechanical failures and preventable crashes.
